Today, March 16, would have been my grandpa’s 99th birthday. As my aunt Marilyn wrote in Indiana Memories, Art’s 1980 hardcover poetry anthology, he was a patient person who “never hurried through life.”
In that spirit of reflection, ArthurMapes.com will take a moment every weekday this spring to remember our poet laureate and his gifts to us. We’ll take a deeper look into his life, his poems, and the topics that inspired him. We’ll browse old news clippings and photos and the work of other poets who were influences. I hope to welcome some guest posts, too — if you’d like to submit one, please let me know! I’ll hope you’ll check back daily through the end of April (National Poetry Month) and join us in our remembrance.
